PREPARATION FOR SEMI MODIFIED COMPACT CARS
THIS SET OF RULES APPLY ONLY TO THIS CLASS.
1. VEHICLES PERMITTED; Compact cars may not exceed 104” wheelbase as measured from center hub of front axles to center hub of rear axle. All cars must be standard makes. No convertibles. No frame swapping allowed.
2. Reinforcing IS allowed from center of the front hubs forward to the front of the car. ANYTHING GOES.
3. GLASS; All glass must be removed from windows, headlights, and taillights prior to arrival. Rolling down windows is not permitted. All trash must also be removed prior to arrival.
4. WINDSHIELDS; No bars allowed in windshield area. Two chains are allowed.
5. HOODS; Hoods may have 2 threaded rods no larger than 3/4” diameter through frame to hood. Plates or washers may not be larger than 6” x 6”. Hoods may be patch welded or seam welded. MUST HAVE 12” x 12” HOLE over carburetor and for inspection.
6. TRUNKS; Trunk lids may have 2 threaded rods no larger than 3/4” diameter through frame to trunk lid. Plates or washers may not be larger than 6” x 6”. Trunk lid may be patch welded or seam welded. Rear bumper may be welded to sheet metal. Absolutely no reinforcing in the trunk. MUST HAVE 12” x 12” HOLE in center of trunk lid for inspection.
7. DOORS; Doors may be patch welded or seam welded. One piece of steel must be welded across the driver’s door for safety. It may extend no more than 6" past the door on either end and be no more than 6 " wide. It is strongly recommended that a cage be installed over the window of the driver's door. Cage may extend no more than 2" past edge of door.
8. TIRES; Only 13" or 14" tires are permitted. Tires may not be bolted or screwed to the rim in any manner. No ply restrictions on tires. No snow tires or bar tread tires on drive axles. NO SPLIT RIMS!!
9. GAS TANKS. Factory gas tanks must be removed from the vehicle. Drivers must use STEEL tanks no larger than 7 gallon capacity. NO PLASTIC TANKS. Gas cans are not allowed. No gas line may extend past the rear seat of the vehicle. Gas lines must be firmly attached to the steel tank used. Gas tanks must be located behind the driver’s seat, or in middle of car where the back seat was. Tank must be securely fastened to the floor and securely covered. (Example; floor mat or rubber mat) Gas tanks and lines must pass judges inspection.
10. DASH BARS; Dash bars will be permitted. One plate will be allowed on each end of the bar with maximum plate size of 4" x 4". Nothing is allowed to extend from the dash bar forward except tabs to hold the dash bar to the dash. Anything else on the engine side of the dash bar forward to the center of the front hubs will disqualify you.
11. DRIVER AND PASSENGER compartment may be reinforced for driver protection as follows; No welding to frame. Dash bar & brace bar may be welded to tin only with 4” x 4” plates. No rear brace bars. Frame may be bolted up with a total of four ¾” bolts and plates no larger than 6”. No added reinforcement to floor. Gas tank, battery box and tranny cooler may be bolted through or welded to the floor only, not to the frame and no added steel. Driver’s compartment reinforcing may go only to the front of the rear speaker deck. Any further back will result in disqualification.
12. BUMPERS: Bumpers may be trimmed. Bumpers may be from any American made auto. Bumpers should be welded in place but to bumper brackets only. Rear bumper may be welded to sheet metal.
13. Frame, fenders, hood, and inner fenders from the center of the front hubs to the fire wall MUST BE 100% STOCK, NO PLATING, STUFFING OR WELDING ALLOWED!! NO WELDING INNER FENDER TO FRAME!! If there is anything added in these area, you will be disqualified. You will not be allowed to cut anything out, you will be out.
14. RADIATORS; Water barrels, radi-barrels, radiators are allowed. They must contain water only, no antifreeze. All vent hoses from radiators must be secured and discharged towards ground at front of vehicle. NO hoses will be allowed to be unsecured or above engine level.
15. TRANSMISSIONS: Transmission cooling systems are optional and must pass safety inspection. Mounts may be welded or chained.
16. ENGINES; Only 4 or 6 cylinder engines are allowed. Engine in vehicle does not have to be of the same manufacturer as the body. Stacks are permitted. Motor mounts may be welded.
17. SUSPENSION; All suspensions should be as close to stock as possible. All suspensions must meet the approval of the officials at inspection. Leaf spring conversions are allowed. Leaf springs must be of passenger car origin and stagger down from longest to shortest. Each leaf must be at least 1" shorter than one above it. Leaf springs must be mounted under the axle. Maximum of 6 clamps per side no larger than 2” x 4” x 1/4". Rear shackles may be welded or bolted to frame & be no larger than 3" wide x 8" long. Maximum of 7 leafs. No welding of leafs. Stock shocks must be used, cannot be replaced by pipes.
18. BATTERIES; One or two stock automotive batteries OR ONE larger battery are allowed. Batteries must be securely fastened to the floor and covered with floor mat or carpet to protect driver in case of battery explosion. Battery boxes cannot exceed 24" x 24".
19. REINFORCEMENTS; Absolutely NO REINFORCEMENTS OR EXTRA MATERIALS will be permitted in any part of the vehicle or in the trunk unless specified elsewhere in rules for this class.
20. BRAKES; All vehicles must have working brakes before the beginning of the heat
21. Any object attached to the outside of the vehicle must meet the approval of the officials.
22. VEHICLE NUMBERS; Vehicles can be decorated in any manner within the limits of good taste. NO obscenity. Paint a number on driver's door, passenger door, and both sides of a stand up roof sign no more than 24" wide before you arrive. Numbers must be in all locations. Roof sign may not be braced to any other part of the vehicle. Any duplicate numbers will be changed before the derby starts.
23. Frame hump over rear wheels may not be reinforced in any manner.
24. If car is straightened from a previous derby, NO welding may be done in the “NO WELDING” areas.
